1999 Armenia, Colombia earthquake Before i begin with my introduction, these are some pictures taken after the earthquake. ![]() ![]() ![]() This was what that was left after the earthquake. Poor victims. Not only have they lost their house, they have also lost their closest ones. ![]() This is a picture of a rescue team saving victims trapped under a collapsed building. ![]() On 25 January 1997, catastrophe struck Armenia, Columbia. There was an EARTHQUAKE. The strongest one for the past 16 years. Devastating? I agree. 60% of the buildings in Armenia collapsed, due to the poorly engineered structures. The exploding buildings killed countless people. bricks traveled through buses full of people. Many were killed by flying debris Over 2000 lives were lost in this languishing earthquake. 4,000 people were injured in the course of this event. Worst still, 3900 people have been missing since then. The economic in Armenia suffered a great impact as well. With the Columbia Coffee as the main economic activity, about 8.000 of the coffee farms were either completely or partially destroyed. Also, the banks and financial services was not able to dispense money for weeks! The magnitude of this unfortunate earthquake is 6.2 . In south America, the Nazca plate is moving eastward to the fixed South America plate. In western Columbia, the motion of the Nazca plate relative to the South America plate is about 70mm per year. Kudos go to the US government. They helped to improve the lives of the people living in Columbia.
To date $USD 1, 076, 505 has been donated by the US government. In my opinion, Armenia, Columbia should have exercised a trial earthquake preparedness activity, to prepare themselves for any unexpected events in the future. They should be highly educated in this area. If it weren't for you... Credits.
